Greg Ellison comments “We believe that the combination of our internal training and on-job development gives ambitious, hard-working and determined young people a great opportunity to experience working life in a business that is dynamic, innovative and growing quickly. In addition we continue to work with Junior Achievement via our three year strategic sponsorship to support young people across the island whilst at school in developing their entrepreneurial skills, financial literacy and becoming ready for the world of work.”
During the summer holidays Boston provided 5 students with invaluable experience of the working world. Our interns, Ivan Sapunov, Jenny Vernon-Browne, Daniel Maggs, Shannan Wilkins and Alex Long are working or have worked amongst the different teams at Boston throughout their summer break.
Ivan, with 5 months under his belt, fits working at Boston around his studies for the Level 3 Diploma in Business at the Isle of Man College during the school year and working full time during the holidays. Ivan comments “Working at Boston has been a tremendous experience for me, it is my first job in a large office and I find the staff friendly and very helpful. I have found that working for Boston is enjoyable and rewarding, I am making great progress.” Ivan is currently working with our accounts team and is ultimately aiming to use the experience gained in order to achieve his goal of qualifying as a Chartered Accountant.
Jenny Vernon-Browne, studying English Language at Bangor University and Daniel Maggs, studying International Business at the University of Edinburgh were with Boston for the majority of August.
Daniel has found that his time at Boston has tied in well with his studies at university and his plan to join the world of Investment Banking, commenting that “Boston has a myriad of clients on a global scale which therefore ties in very well with my degree which is heavily focused on the international aspects of finance and business”.
Shannan Wilkins spent 5 weeks at the beginning of the summer and is currently studying Politics and International Relations at Oxford Brookes University.
Alex Long, joined the team for one week in August working on lots of exciting projects within the Business Development team including activities planned for the Monaco Yacht Show, Alex is currently completing his International Baccalaureate at King William’s College and is hoping to own his own business in the future. He explained that the “placement with Boston will certainly influence what I choose to do later on in life”
Providing a work placement for a young person at Boston requires commitment from staff and hard work, but it can be both fun and rewarding. By identifying and developing the next generation of successful businessmen and women, and championing the culture of excellence ethos currently evident at Boston, and throughout Isle of Man PLC, we can ensure that the Isle of Man continues to flourish in all sectors.
