Meet our CFO Nick Gilbert

After graduating from The University of Manchester, I decided to pursue a career in accounting. I loved the opportunities that the profession would present as I progressed through my journey.

Please can you give us an overview of your career.

After graduating from The University of Manchester, I decided to pursue a career in accounting. I loved the opportunities that the profession would present as I progressed through my journey.

My career started in Audit, working for BDO & PKF which gave me exposure to many different businesses in many different locations. My time was split across the north of England and London.

I always knew my skill set best served a company as a team member as opposed to being an outside advisor and so, around 15 years ago I decided to move into industry and out of the professional services environment.

Over the past 15 years I have worked in London at a number of different businesses ranging from Healthcare, IT, Media and Music Publishing.

I was attracted to Boston, particularly when I understood the anticipated journey that it is about to embark upon, and when I met the team everyone was super motivated – which is always fresh and exciting.

Where is the most interesting place you have travelled to for work and why?

I’ve been lucky enough to travel quite extensively for work, over the years. The majority of my travel centred across all of Europe but as far flung as USA and Australia.

However, the time spent in USA, specifically Austin (Texas) was a highlight. It’s a great city with an amazing vibe and culture. I would recommend anyone to visit. I love to watch live music and so the ability to go out any night of the week and find a long list of options was great. Whether it be a big gig of 1000 to a small venue of 10, the quality was always amazing and the people very welcoming.

What’s the one gadget you couldn’t live without?

My phone is my most valued gadget, both personally and professionally. I travel a lot for work and so I like it that my family can contact me at any time, and also I can be flexible and use my time effectively whilst on the move.

We all rely on it so much nowadays as it keeps us connected to everyone and everything.

I look back at the times where I’ve left it at home or let the battery run dry and I feel totally lost without it.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Working with a varied number of stakeholders. I spend the majority of my time working with the central finance team and the group board, but my work also means I need to partner with all other team members too. Whether that be our staff on the ground servicing our clients in IOM and Malta or working with our new sponsors, Horizon Capital.

What was the last TV series you watched?

I wish I had the time to watch more TV but I don’t get too many opportunities nowadays. However, I did recently binge watch all of Game of Thrones over a few months. Watching it back-to-back with no breaks and not having to wait for the next series was amazing. It was such a good watch, I still remember how shocked I was during the Red Wedding episode!

Tell us something that might surprise us about you

I obtained the Year 9 discus throw record at secondary school and I recently found that the record still stands today!

What’s your motto or personal mantra?

Don’t put something off to tomorrow that you can do today. Crack on and don’t procrastinate!

What are you most proud of?

My family. 100% my family!
